NE MO Included in Disaster Declaration

Jefferson City, MO – Missouri's governor wants a major disaster declaration for Clark, Lewis, Scotland and 29 other counties. The request was sent to the federal government this week.

Governor Jay Nixon said the declaration would speed the recovery from flooding and severe storms.

In a release issued by the governor's office, Nixon said, "Since the spring, Missouri communities have been hit by flooding, strong winds and excessive rainfall which have left severe damage in their wake.

"I am asking the President to issue a major disaster declaration so that counties, local governments and individuals that have sustained severe damage because of the storms and flooding will have the resources to rebuild and recover."

Nixon also asked US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to designate 55 Missouri counties as primary disaster areas. This would permit assistance for farmers from the USDA's Farm Service Agency.

Clark, Lewis, and Scotland counties are also included in that request.
