MS Study in Lewistown Finds Cluster, No Cause

Lewistown, IL – Results of a study of five posible multiple sclerosis "clusters" in Illinois will be explained Saturday morning in Lewistown. The study was done by the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Residents had reported what they believed to be more cases of the nerve disease than normal. Spokeswoman Barb Sjostrum says three of the towns showed more victims of the nerve disease than expected. They were Lewistown, Paw Paw and Morrison. Savanna and Depue did not show elevated numbers. She says researchers found no environmental link. However, the disease was most prevalent among those with northern European ancestry and among women. Sjostrum says in the towns studied eleven women had MS for every man. Nationally, the figure is closer to three women for each man. She says the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry funded the study, but does not plan other studies at this time.
