Galesburg, IL – The former Knox County recorder is heading off to prison after a judge accepted her guilty plea of misdemeanor theft.
Paula Monzo was accused of writing about 35-hundred dollars in checks on the account of the Knox County Democratic Central Committee. Police reports indicate Monzo was having trouble paying bills and had a cocaine habit.
An audit of the recorder's office found no irregularities.
Judge Stephen Mathers on Tuesday accepted the negotiated sentence of 14-days in the Knox County Jail with credit for two days served, 24-months of probation along with 42-hundred dollars in restitution, and 21-days of in-patient drug treatment.
Monzo made no statement as the sentence was imposed.
