Monmouth-Roseville Keeps One Fee Steady

T.J. Carson
Superintendent Ed Fletcher says increasing registration fees would only be a "very, very minor dent" in a "big problem."

The Monmouth-Roseville School District is still feeling the pinch from the state in regards to funding. But the district decided against increasing one funding source to help make up the difference.

That source is registration fees.  The board made just one slight change for next school year: it will increase the kindergarten through 6th grade fee by $20. Superintendent Ed Fletcher said the increase would allow  students in those grades to attend athletic events hosted by the district for free.

Other registration fees will hold steady.  The base fees for the 2015-2016 school year are:

  • K-6 - $75
  • Junior High - $90
  • Senior High - $132

Fletcher said it would be unfair to parents to try and balance the budget through increased fees.
“The reality of it is we could raise fees hundreds of dollars, and it’s still not going to cover the shortfall from general state aid that we’ve received -- or don’t receive from the state,” Fletcher said.

Fletcher said the district collects around $40,000 each year through registration fees, which he said is a “very small” percentage of the general revenue budget.

Voters in the school district twice last year rejected increases in the education fund tax levy that would have offset losses in state funding.

The school board earlier this year added activity fees at the junior and senior high schools to offset those costs.
