Monmouth-Roseville Eliminates 88 Positions

Monmouth, IL – The Monmouth-Roseville School board this week agreed to lay off 15 teachers, 9 coaches and one administrator as it continues to deal with a reduction in state funding. A total of 88 positions are being eliminated.

But Superintendent Paul Woehlke says the number 88 is misleading. The number represents the number of positions being cut, not personnel. For example, he says 47 support staff positions are being eliminated due to cost containment until new building schedules are determined.

"Most of those positions will be refilled," says Woehlke. "It's just that everything is in a state of flux because of our reorganization. So it's not as bad as it sounds to say 88."

Woehlke says the number is misleadingly high because many of the 47 support staff perform more than one function.

The school board took ten different votes when deciding which employees to eliminate, each representing a different category. A list provided by District 238 outlines the teacher layoffs/staff reductions as follows:

1. Dismissal of CUSD #238 Non-Tenured Teacher Due to Uncertain Grant Funding: one teacher.

2. Dismissal of CUSD #238 Non-Tenured Teacher Due to Uncertain Student Enrollment: one teacher.

3. Reduction from Full-Time to Part-Time of CUSD #238 Non-Tenured Teacher Due to Cost Containment: one teacher.

4. Dismissal of CUSD #238 Non-Tenured Teachers and Administrators Due to Cost Containment: 12 teachers and one administrator

5. Dismissal of CUSD #238 Probationary Teacher: one teacher

6. Dismissal of CUSD #238 Athletic Coaches Due to Cost Containment: nine coaches.

7. Reduction in Force of CUSD #238 Educational Support Staff Due to Uncertain Grant Funding: nine employees.

8. Reduction in Force of CUSD #238 Educational Support Staff Due to Uncertain Student Enrollment: five employees. These employees will be recalled only if needed due to contractual class size limits having been exceeded. The teacher staffing plan is to not exceed the contractual class size limits.

9. Reduction from Full-Time to Part-Time of CUSD #238 Educational Support Staff Due to Cost Containment: one employee.

10. Reduction in Force of CUSD #238 Educational Support Staff Due to Cost Containment: 47 positions.
