McDonough Sheriff Defends Budgeting

Macomb, IL – The McDonough County sheriff is accusing Republican county board members of playing politics with his office. Sheriff Mike Johnson says his spending is at three-fourths of this year's budget as of nine months into the fiscal year. Johnson has been criticized by board members for overspending. He believes they are playing politics with the sheriff's office. His requested budget for the fiscal year that begins Dec. 1 was up to $300,000 more than this year, even though the budget committee had requested level spending. Johnson says that figure included both overtime and the hire of three more deputies. However, he says either alternative would work ... and that would trim his budget request.
