Matrix Pay System Implemented in Macomb

Macomb, IL – Macomb is changing the compensation system it uses for many employees.

The new system, called the Matrix Pay System, increases the pay for new employees at a quicker pace than the old system. However, the pay is capped at a lower level than what was previously possible under the Merit Step System.

The new pay matrix covers all worker positions except contract employees, those elected to office, and those in collective bargaining units.

City Administrator Dean Torreson said the new system will save the city money in the long run.

"Those employees, if they have a 40 year career, extending out that far we're talking about in the millions (in savings)," Torreson said.

Cost of living increases will still be possible for employees after they reach the top step in their position. Also, it's possible for someone to earn more money if he/she changes jobs.

The change in systems is retroactive to May 1, 2010.

The change was unanimously approved by city council members during their December 6 meeting.
