Western Illinois University will offer a week-long summer camp for junior high-age girls to grow their interest in mathematics.
Girls + Math will allow participants to explore critical thinking skills, computer software, and mathematical equations throughout the week.
University Liaison Helena Lira said the camp is designed to encourage their interest in the subject before they enter high school.
"When you put kids interested in math in the same room with other little girls that are interested in math, being taught by women who have this career that teach at a high school and college level, it gives them an opportunity to think okay, that could be me," said Lira.
The program aims to combat gender based stereotypes in the industry by exposing the students to the accomplishments of famous women in science and math.
