Macomb teachers and the school district have a new three year agreement in place.
The Macomb Board of Education unanimously approved the new contract which has teachers getting a 0.75% raise in the first year, a 1% raise in the second year and a 1.25% raise in the third year.
In addition, the amount teachers have to pay for health insurance goes up $5 a month in the second year and an additional $5 a month in the third year. All other provisions are unchanged from the teacher’s previous contract that expired at the end of last school year.
The Macomb Education Association declined to release a vote total of its membership’s vote on the deal last week, and would only say that it was ratified.
Both the union and the district say they are happy to have a new deal in place, and are looking forward toward the future and educating students.
School board members praised the union’s negotiating team for a professional approach, even though public rhetoric on the contract impasse had become heated at times over the past few months. The teachers had been working without a contract this school year.
Superintendent Patrick Twomey says the district will still need to make cuts to balance the budget next year, but the new contract gives the district more flexibility.
