Macomb Highlights Historical Ties to Namesake

Wikipedia

September 11 marked the 200th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Plattsburg in upstate New York. General Alexander Macomb led the charge which made way for the ending of the War of 1812.

A framed piece detailing General Macomb’s history and rise to prominence is now on display at City Hall.

The gift was presented during a ceremony Thursday. It comes from some of General Macomb’s distant relatives who Mayor Mike Inman met during his trip this summer to Washington D.C.

"We had a short, but nice afternoon where we talked about what commonalities we had and what distance we had come to get to that perspective,” Inman said.

Former Macomb Mayor Tom Carper introduced Inman to Kevin Wensing of Quincy who now lives in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife, Hartley Hopson Wensing. She is a sixth generation descendant of General Macomb.  Her mother, Kay Staton Hobson, is a fifth generation descendent.

During his trip, Mayor Inman and the Wensings visited General Macomb’s grave site at Congressional Cemetery in Washington D.C.
