'Life Of Pi' Star's Favorite Melodies

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

After speaking with Suraj Sharma about "Life of Pi," we asked to tell us about his favorite songs for our feature In Your Ear, that's where some of the guests of our program tell us about the music they listen to. So here's what's playing in his ear.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BULLET CHAIN")

SURAJ SHARMA: My name is Suraj Sharma and right now listening to this song called "Bullet Chain" by Joni Fatora.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BULLET CHAIN")

JONI FATORA: (Singing) Moving like the speed of sound. Feet can't keep on the ground. Can't stay in one place. Keep moving like a bullet train. Like a bullet train.

SHARMA: I really like listening to this song because it gives me this really goose bumpy feeling. So when I'm walking around, it inspires me in a very, very nice way.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BULLET CHAIN")

FATORA: (Singing) 'Cause I can't stop time. Like, like, like a bullet train.

SHARMA: Another song I'm listening to - and I have been listening to for really long time - is "Minds Without Fear" and it's by Imogen Heap and Vishal Dadlani, who is an Indian artist.

IMOGEN HEAP AND VISHAL DADLANI: (Singing in foreign language)

IMOGEN HEAP: (Singing) Nearly every inch of us on the line. Plucking on the string of everything that could have been. Such unrest future just factors of our lives. Tham ja murh ja naseeba.

VISHAL DADLANI: (Singing) Kahaan le aaye naseeba.

SHARMA: And, yeah, that song just gives me a lot of - it makes me feel a strong and like yeah, I can go on from here.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "MINDS WITHOUT FEAR")

DADLANI: (Singing) Kahaan le aaye naseeba.

HEAP: (Singing) But we just might make this up with our heads held high. So this story continues with minds without fear.

DADLANI: (Sung in foreign language)

SHARMA: Another song that's kind of interesting is "Pi's Lullaby," which is like the first song that plays in the movie also.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "PI'S LULLABY")

MYCHAEL DANNA: (Singing in foreign language)

SHARMA: It's a very simple song, but it really moves you. So I mean it moves me, at least so I really like that song also - except I can't listen to it too many times because I just get very emotional.

DANNA: (Sung in foreign language)

MARTIN: That's actor Suraj Sharma telling us what's playing in his ear. And that's our program for today. I'm Michel Martin and this is TELL ME MORE from NPR News. Let's talk more tomorrow.
