Lee County Wants More Port Information

Fort Madison, IA – The Lee County Board of Supervisors wants to gather more information before it signs off on a grant application for a multi-state port commission.

The Mid-America Port Commission encompasses 26 counties in Southeast Iowa, Northeast Missouri, and West Central Illinois. It got its start, after the flood of 1993, as a tool for intermodal development.

The Mid-America Port Commission says it is ready to move forward with a plan to build port facilities throughout the tri-state region. It is asking the Lee County Board of Supervisors to sign off on an application for federal stimulus funding to build its first facility near Quincy, Illinois.

Board Chairman Gary Folluo (FOH-lee-oh) says Lee County wants to make sure the application will not impact the efforts of the Southeast Iowa Regional Economic and Port Authority. He says the board would like to discuss its concerns with one of Iowa's representatives on the Mid-America Port Commission.

Former LCEDG Executive Director Lowell Junkins and former Des Moines County Supervisor Tim Hoscheck serve on the commission. It's unclear when such a meeting could take place.
