Lee County To Increase Veteran's Affairs Services

Fort Madison, IA – Military veterans will soon have more of an opportunity to access benefits and assistance in Lee County. The Board of Supervisors has approved expanding the hours for Veteran's Affairs Director Paul Carroll from 12/week to 20/week. Chairman George Morgan says having Lee County's VA office open just 12 hours per week is not providing veterans enough of an opportunity to apply for benefits. Morgan expects the office to be open 4 hours/day, 5 days/week, instead of the current 3 hours/day, 4 days/week. He says an outreach program, to help veterans in facilities such as nursing homes, will also be developed within the county.

In other action, the Board of Supervisors approved a 2% wage hike, effective July 1, and another effective Jan. 1, 2007, for all non-union employees. Union workers will receive the same structured pay hike, at the same times, through their negotiated contracts with the county. The County Attorney, Auditor, Recorder, Sheriff, and Treasurer will receive a 2% pay hike in July. The County Compensation Board had recommended a 3.5% hike for elected leaders. The Board of Supervisors will not receive a pay increase.
