Lee County Could Hold Jail Vote In Next 18 Months

Fort Madison, IA – Plans to renovate the Lee County Jail could go before voters within the next 18 months. The county wants to replace the deteriorating temporary housing trailers and upgrade several other sections of the jail. While the county has contibuted $500,000 to the project, Supervisor George Morgan says a bond referendum will likely be needed so money can be borrowed. To start the process, Morgan says an architectural firm has been selected by the jail committee. Board Chairman Larry Kruse says a contract, for less than $20,000; is still being worked out with a firm from Nebraska. The Board of Supervisors has told County Auditor Anne Pedersen to budget for a county-wide election sometime between this July and June of 2008.
