Lawmakers Honor Lane Evans

Washington DC – Members of the US House have paid tribute to retiring Congressman Lane Evans (D-IL). The tribute was organized by Jerry Costello (D-IL) and took place after the end of legislative business Thursday night. Costello said Evans always defended the rights of working men and women, and praised his efforts on behalf of veterans. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) also praised Evans for helping veterans and their children. She pointed out Evans pushed for passage of a law that provides health and compensation benefits to children of veterans exposed to Agent Orange who were born with spinal bifida. Kaptur said this was the first time children of veterans received such benefits. An Evans' spokesperson says other lawmakers submitted comments in writing for the record. He also says Evans was gratified by the tribute. Evans suffers from Parkinson's disease, which has made it too difficult for him to continue serving. His career in the House lasted 24 years.
