Landfill Gains Permit

Macomb, IL – The Waste Management landfill near Macomb finally has its expansion permit. The county's treasury will get some new income. Area manager Steve Harenberg says the application took seven years because of design changes and personnel changes at the state EPA. He says the existing 11-acre landfill should be full next month. Then his crews will begin filling the first of four six-acre cells of the new landfill. He says at current rates, the new landfill could last about 90 years. However. he's trying to build up the current 200 tons per day to help pay the cost of the expansion. The new fill will also pay the county's general fund one dollar per ton as a host fee. Law and Legal committee chairman John Lawson says this will help the county pay back some of the loans it's taken from its environmental fund to balance previous budgets.
