Knox County YMCA Looks to Expand Downtown

T.J. Carson
The Y wants to turn the former Wells Fargo building on Main St. into a Wellness Center featuring exercise equipment, group fitness programs and locker rooms.

The Knox County YMCA is experiencing an all-time membership high with about 8,400 members.  CEO Adam Sampson said the Y is growing larger than what it's locations at Carl Sandburg Drive in Galesburg and in Knoxville can handle.

“Having to repurpose space for many of our group fitness classes has made it more difficult to serve many of the children in our community,” Sampson said.

To combat the problem, the Knox County YMCA began a capital campaign with the goal of raising around $1-million in order to purchase and renovate the former Wells Fargo building on Main Street in Galesburg.

He said the Y wants to move quickly to get the building up and ready.

“I expect us to continue through the capital campaign process for the next two to three months, and then be able to follow up with the construction necessary,” Sampson said. “And we think we’ll be open no later than the summer.”

Sampson said the new location would help support the city’s infrastructure and bring more people to the downtown area.
