Knox County 911 Makes Switch

T.J. Carson
Knox County Dispatcher Nancy Budde works the recently upgraded 911 system.

Knox County's 911 system has moved into the digital age.  Sheriff David Clague called it a "huge step" forward as the emergency dispatch system was switched from analog to digital.

Clague said the new system has on-screen pop ups with information about who's calling, their location, and playbacks of recorded calls.

Clague said the system will make dispatches faster with more detailed information.

“The ability to be able to pull up a map and to say 'Okay, I know that Officer A is at this location, Officer B is at that location, maybe we need to put somebody in between,'” Clague said.

The upgrades were funded with help from thepublic safety tax that was approved by voters last November.

Clague said the upgrade cost around $424,000.

He said a couple more features must still be added.

“Texting, photographing, just a whole host of different things that will probably be done in stages,” Clague said.

The ability to send texts is expected to be up and running in a couple months.
