Keokuk to Watch out for Garbage

Keokuk, IA – Keokuk residents will have to be more conscious of how they throw away their garbage. Starting today, residents must have no more than 2 trash cans, the cans cannot be more than 33 gallons, and tight-fitting lids must be on the cans when the garbage is set out. Codes Enforcement Officer Kathie Mahoney says these laws have been on the books for at least 5 years, but they have not been enforced. Mahoney says residents should set the cans out the morning their garbage is picked up, and move the cans off the curb when they are emptied. She will be following the garbage trucks on their routes and if a home is not compliant, the garbage will not be picked up and the can will be tagged. Mahoney says if the issues are not corrected by the next time the garbage is picked up, the property owner faces a $50 fine.
