Keokuk Updates Nuisance Codes

The Keokuk City Council has re-written the rules for code enforcement and nuisances.

The most significant change is that there is now a section on snow removal.

Property owners will have 24-hours after a snow- or ice-storm to remove accumulations from the sidewalks in front of their properties.

Those who do not, the city can do the work and charge property owners for the service.

Financial penalties could also be assessed as warranted by the city.

The new ordinance also states that trash containers must have tight-fitting lids and garbage can only be placed inside containers.

There is also clarification of the policies for yard junk, junk machinery, grass and weeds.

The new Health and Sanitation ordinance will take ffect in roughly two weeks.
