Keokuk School Board To Vote Soon On Closing School

Keokuk, IA – The Keokuk school board could vote, later this month, on whether to close one of the district's elementary schools. The district's facilities committee says closing Lincoln Elementary would result in a savings of $87,000. Superintendent Jane Babcock says declining enrollment numbers have prompted the district to look at closing the school, located on Keokuk's southwest side. The school board could also vote, in two weeks, to create a pair of committees to look into the building of a new school to replace 3 of the district's 5 elementaries. One panel would look for a potential school site on the city's south side while the other would explore options for dividing students between fewer buildings.
