Keokuk, IA – A Keokuk man will serve time for stealing money from a church and two non-profit groups.
District Court Judge William Dowell sentenced Doug Atterberg, 64, to 30 years in prison. 20 of the 30 years are to be served consecutively.
Atterberg pled guilty, in August, to 3 counts of first degree theft. He was charged with stealing roughly $200,000 during the last 10 years.
The agencies are the United Presbyterian Church, the Keokuk Community Fine Arts Council, and the Lee County Historical Society. Atterberg served as treasurer for each.
Lee County Attorney Mike Short says the judge also fined Atterberg $3,000 and ordered him to pay back the money to the three organizations. The sentencing took place Monday, September 28.
Short says the only people to speak during the hearing were Atterberg and his wife, Anne. The court received about a dozen impact statements.
The statements were not read during the hearing, but Judge Dowell did open the to the public. Most referenced a loss of trust in Atterberg and a call for punishment.
Atterberg would be eligible for early parole.
