Keokuk to Dedicate Memorial

Keokuk, IA – A memorial honoring soldiers from across the Tri-State region will be dedicated over the holiday weekend. The public dedication of the Keokuk Veteran's Memorial will take place Monday morning at 10:00. The memorial sits at the entrance to Oakland Cemetery, just yards from the entrance to the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorial Committee Chairman George Morgan says the ceremony is expected to last about a bit more than an hour. It will include several guest speakers, a reading of the honor roll, prayers and music. Morgan says about 1,400 names have been carved into the memorial, which resembles a series of arches set side by side. He says more than $180,000 has been raised for the project. Seating for the ceremony is limited. A shuttle service from the high school will be used to transfer visitors to and from the cemetery to alleviate parking problems.
