Keokuk To Conduct Intersection Study

Keokuk, IA – Keokuk wants the state to look into whether one of the city's busiest intersections should be made wider. Dozens of large tractor-trailers utilize the 7th and Main Street intersection on a daily basis. Public Works Director, Bill Richards, says the intersection was not designed for these large semis. The city council has asked the Iowa Department of Transportation to conduct a traffic study at that intersection. Richards says the DOT would focus on tractor trailers turning left from Main onto 7th and those turning right from 7th onto Main. He says conducting the study will improve Keokuk's chances of obtaining grant money to make the intersection wider. One expansion option would be to remove some sidewalk, which is relatively brand new, to add a wider lane. The city could also look at tearing down the old Main Street Cafe, which is in very poor condition, to garner the extra space. Richards says it should take the DOT between 6 and 9 months to complete the study.
