Keokuk Close To Finishing Budget

Keokuk, IA – The Keokuk City Council has nearly resolved a six-figure shortfall in the city's spending plan for next year. Finance Chair Doug Matlick says the deficit in the general fund, which includes the police, fire, and parks departments; is down about $8,000. This after the council made nearly $200,000 worth of cuts at its last workshop. Matlick says the council put a cap on budget requests for each department in the general fund. Several departments, including police and fire, asked for a more than five percent inrease in next year's budget, compared to the city's current spending plan. Cutting those requests to allow for no more than 5% budget growth led to much of the savings, $140,000 in the case of the police department. Matlick says he does not expect taxes to increase or services to decrease in next year's budget for the city of Keokuk. The spending plan must be completed by mid-March.
