Increased Hotel Motel Tax Possible in Hannibal

Hannibal, MO – It could cost a little more to spend the night in Hannibal. The Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau plans to place a question on the April ballot asking the public to approve an increase in the city's hotel motel tax. Executive Director, Beau Hicks, says the CVG wants to increase the bed tax from 3% to 6%. He says the tax increase could generate an additional $180,000 a year for the Hannibal CVB. That would essentially double the bureau's current budget. Hicks says the new money would be used to market Hannibal in larger cities such as St. Louis and Columbia. He says the city council must vote 2 more times on placing the hotel motel tax question on the April Ballot.
