IA Supreme Court Denies Request

The appeals process has run out for a northeast Missouri man convicted of 1st Degree Murder in southeast Iowa last year.

The Iowa Supreme Court has denied a request to review the 2012 trial of Tyler Hobbs, 28, of St. Francisville, MO.

A Lee County jury found Hobbs guilty, in Feb. 2012, of killing Shawn Wright of Kahoka in 2010.

Hobbs appealed his conviction after being sentenced to life in prison without parole.

He argued that he should have been given a new trial because the testimony of a key witness should have been disregarded due to her being intoxicated at the time of the alleged incident.

The Iowa Court of Appeals disagreed earlier this year and upheld Hobbs’ conviction.

The three-judge panel ruled the witness-in-question’s testimony should not have been nullified and that there was enough evidence to corroborate it.

It added that the fact that the witness was intoxicated was explained to the jury so jurors could consider it as they saw fit.

The decision by the Iowa Supreme Court means the Court of Appeals decision to uphold the conviction stands.
