Housing Program Considers Keokuk Again

Keokuk, IA – The Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission has had a Self-Help Housing program in place for several years. During that time, a total of six homes have been built in Mount Pleasant, Danville, and New London.

The commission tried to expand the program, last spring, but found little interest in Keokuk. Regional Planner Beth Hartman says the SEIRPC is ready to try again in Lee County.

Participants in the program can qualify for a 33-year, low-interest loan if they meet certain income guidelines. They must also spend at least 30-hours a week building their new home.

Hartman says the participants also help other individuals or families build their new home. She would like to see four homes built in Keokuk and/or West Point.

Hartman says the homes built so far have been ranch-style with multiple bedrooms. She says the average cost is about $120,000.

Hartman says potential home-owners do not have to live in Lee County. She says anyone interested in the program can contact her at (319) 753-5107.
