Hannibal, MO – The Hannibal Expressway would allow those traveling on the Avenue of the Saints to avoid multiple traffic signals within the city. The portion of Highway 61 that runs through Hannibal also passes by dozens of businesses and a couple of schools.
Engineer Paula Gough says the project has been on the Missouri Department of Transportation's radar for some time. But she says the only money available at this time is for the design of the expressway.
Gough says there is no money for right-of-way purchase or actual construction of the roughly $60-million project. She says projects considered state-wide priorities will receive the design funding.
Gough says the future of the Hannibal Expressway hinges on how much money is available through the federal transportation bill.
The exact path of the bypass will be determined at a later date. MoDot will choose one of two options when the design phase gets underway.
