Guilty Plea in Galesburg Fatal Crash

City of Galesburg

A Galesburg woman has pleaded guilty in connection with a hit-and-run  collision that killed a Knox College student last October.

The Illinois AP reported Lakeesha Smith, 34, entered the plea Wednesday afternoon to charges of reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a deadly accident.

Her sentencing is November 13.

Police said Knox College Junior Sekinat Olamitundun Lawani was crossing the street when Smith struck and killed her.

Authorities said Smith was found hours later at her home.

Smith's plea was not part of an agreement with prosecutors, but they agreed to drop several charges.

They also said they will ask for a sentence of no more than nine years in prison.
