Groundbreaking Set for FM Sports Complex

A multi-million dollar project on Fort Madison's west side is ready to proceed.

A groundbreaking for the new Fort Madison Sports Complex is scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 20.

It will be held across 48th Street from the new Fort Madison Middle School

The complex will feature multiple soccer/football fields and several baseball/softball diamonds.

Committee Member Tim Gobble says roughly 90% of the money for the nearly $4-million project has been raised.

He says that is why it is time to break ground.

"We will put the basic footprint down," says Gobble, "with the idea that there will probably be a phase 2.  Some of the other things we have thought about that, but were not necessarily part of the original application, could come into play."

Gobble says that could include additional lighting and parking, several sand volleyball courts and a larger concession area.

He says that is why fundraising will continue for the foreseeable future.
