Galesburg Underpass Project Delayed

City leaders announced that the East Main Street Underpass Project will now have a projected start date of January 2016.

It was originally scheduled to begin in August of this year.

The project is still expected to take two years to complete.

Galesburg City Engineer Wayne Carl said the holdup is due to needing to clarify details with logistics between the three groups working on the project which are the city, the Illinois Department of Transportation and BNSF railway.

“Staging of the construction, which tracks [will] be taken out of service, how long will the contractor have access to the tracks to work on it, and those kind of details,” Carl said.

Carl said he is looking forward to getting the details in writing for contracts related to the project. He said working out the logistics has been a major part of the project.

“That’s a busy crossing at East Main Street with the Amtrak lines that go in there.  So we want to have an acceptable arraignment where the contractor has enough time to work on it, so our costs are not too high.  But also, the railroad doesn’t have tracks closed for an extended period of time, where they can’t do their business either,” Carl said.

Construction bids are expected to go out in November.
