Galesburg School Board Discusses New Committee

T.J. Carson
Galesburg #205 board members want to discuss the purpose of a curriculum committee before its potential approval next month.

The Galesburg Board of Education might create a curriculum committee. District leaders said the need for the committee arose in response to questions from board members about how the district is implementing online courses.

Bart Arthur, Galesburg Schools Superintendent, said the district researched its plan to give credits through online courses, but some board members continue to have concerns.

“You’ve got to have certain requirements for kids to graduate. You've got to have enough seat time in the building," Arthur said. "There are a lot of issues, [including] the teacher contract, and which teachers are going to teach [the online] classes."

Michael Panther, President of the Galesburg Board of Education, said a curriculum committee would have solved those concerns.

“I think it would have been nice if we had a committee ahead of time, kind of developing those ideas, and then presenting it to the board," Panther said. "As it was, it was more or less the board trying to come up with a decision."

The board president will decide who will sit on the committee, likely a combination of principals, teachers, and students.

The school board is expected to vote on creating the committee next month.
