Galesburg Narrows Field in School Superintendent Search

T.J. Carson

The Galesburg School Board has a list of eight finalists for the position.

Board President Michael Panther said interviews with the eight candidates are scheduled for January 28th and 29th.

Panther said all of the candidates have  worked in school districts within 100 miles of Galesburg.

“All the candidates that we’ve seen so far have already had experience as superintendents, which I think most of us thought…I think it’s important for someone that’s going to lead our district, it’s important to have someone who’s already had experience running a school district,” Panther said.

He said the successful candidate will be able to connect with the public and improve the administration's relationship with teachers.

“I think it’s real important that our new superintendent is someone who can build community within our community.  I really look for someone who wants to involve themselves in the community, someone who’s going to be a real active person in the community, someone who can communicate well with everyone,” Panther said.

Panther said between two and three finalists from the eight interviewed will be asked back for a second round of interviews next month. A final decision is expected in February.

The current school superintendent, Bart Arthur, announced in September he plans to retire at the end of the school year.
