Galesburg Meeting on Seminary St Project

Rich Egger

A developer wants to rezone some land on North Seminary Street in Galesburg. The plan is generating enough interest that the city has scheduled a public meeting to talk about it.

The meeting is scheduled for September 11, 5:00 pm, in the Costa Catholic Academy Auditorium. Raufeisen Development will give a presentation on its plan before the floor is opened for a question-and-answer period.

The plan is to change the land from Single Family zoning to a mix of Two Family and General Business District.

Raufeisen would like to build a hotel on the 27-acre site, which is just west of Seminary Square.  There is also potential for commercial development and housing.

Mayor Sal Garza would like to see some senior housing built.

“That's a need that we need to fill here. We don't have affordable housing for senior citizens in the way of affordable condos,” Garza said.

Garza said he has talked to the developer about the idea.  He said those residential units plus some green space should provide a buffer between the development and the existing residential area there.

The mayor also said the community is in need of more hotel rooms. He said the community has lost four hotels in recent years.

A public hearing on the plan is scheduled for the September 18 meeting of the Planning and Zoning Commission.
