Future of Recycling Unclear After Fire

Macomb, IL – Waste Management says it will continue to collect recycled items in Macomb and several other communities in west-central Illinois, even though a fire destroyed the processing center for the materials. But the company says it's not known what can be done with the materials it collects. Waste Management's Dave Schaab says the next closest processing center is two hours away, meaning it will cost quite a bit more to haul items there. He says the company could charge the city for the extra costs or it could interrupt the recycling service. Aldermen took no action on the proposals Monday night. The city hopes more options will be developed. The sorting center is owned by Bridgeway. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No one was injured in the fire, which happened on Saturday.
