Fort Madison Withholds GRRWA Fee

Fort Madison, IA – Fort Madison wants to send a message to the Great River Regional Waste Authority. The message is that change is needed. The city council has voted to withhold the waste management fee Fort Madison pays to the waste authority. A recent state audit of the organization revealed hundreds of thousands of dollars in improper or questionable spending. Council member Chris Greenwald hopes the move will send the message, to the waste authority, that it is time to clean up its operations. Greenwald says the current director, who is on paid leave, should be fired and the commission members should be replaced. The city paid the waste authority more than $200,000 during the previous fiscal year. The money, which comes from taxpayers, will now sit in a fund until the council decides to resume payments. The Montrose city council is already withholding its waste management fee of about $20,000 per year.
