Fort Madison Water Cost to Increase

Fort Madsion, IA – Water rates will soon be on the rise in Fort Madison. The city council has approved the final reading of a measure to increase all water rates, effective April 1. The monthly water bills for residential and commercial customers will increase by about 25%. City Manager Bill Kelly says the only change from the original plan is the wholesale rate offered to Rathbun Regional Water Association. He says that rate was to go up to $2.00/1000 gallons purchased. That will now be $1.80/1000 gallons. Kelly says the change is needed because Fort Madison cannot charge Rathbun for capital improvements. The city council appears to be in favor of building a new water plant. It has given the go-ahead for surveys to be done to determine the best location on the city's southwest side.
