Fort Madison To Resume GRRWA Payments

Fort Madison, IA – Fort Madison is ready to make its payments to the Great River Regional Waste Authority. The city council voted unanimously, last night, to stop withholding the city's monthly waste management fee payment of roughly $17,000. Alderman Brad Randolph says the waste authority has done enough to justify the decision. The changes include firing the director, implementing a competitive bid process, and asking the state to audit the authority's books for the 2005 and 2006 fiscal years. Randolph, who will replace Steve Ireland on the waste authority commission this month, says more changes are needed. Randolph says he will push for Lee County, Henry County, and Keokuk to elect new commission members. He says the current waste authority agreement should also be reopened so other communities, such as Montrose, can be represented. Lee County had threatened to sue Fort Madison if the council did not vote to resume the payments.
