Fort Madison Plant Staying Open... & Expanding

Fort Madison, IA – Dozens of jobs are going to remain in Lee County, instead of being moved to Southeast Missouri. California -based Gleason Corporation recently announced plans to close its Fort Madison plant and consolidate operations into its plant in Caruthersville. After several weeks of negotiations, plans have changed. The plant in southeast Missouri will now close and Fort Madison's plant will remain open. Lee County Economic Development Director, Lowell Junkins says 90 jobs will be retained and another 40-50 will be created, through the consolidation of the plants. Junkins says financial incentives, for moving expenses, and a new 6-year contract between Gleason and its employees lead to the Fort Madison plant staying open. Details of the new contract were not made available. The consolidation of the 2 plants is expected to take place within the next 90 days.
