Fort Madison Might Get New School Building

Fort Madison, IA – A new school building might be on the horizon in Fort Madison. The facilities planning committee is recommending the Fort Madison School District build a new K-8 facility. The building would replace Denmark Elementary and Fort Madison Middle School. Superintendent Kenneth Marang says the Denmark building is falling apart. He says there are also issues with the middle school being located on a small piece of land in residential neighborhood. The committee says building a 900 student facility, between Denmark and Fort Madison, would cost around $17,000,000. The panel says building a new elementary school and a new middle school could cost the district more than $20,000,000. Marang says the next step is for residents to circulate a petition calling for a public vote on whether the district should borrow the money for the project.
