Fort Madison, IA – The Fort Madison School Board has accepted Stahl Construction's bid of $14-million to build its new 4-8 school. The firm out of St. Louis Park, Minnesota submitted the lowest of six bids for the construction.

Superintendent Ken Marang says the base bid came in well below estimate.

The low bid allows Fort Madison to spend several hundred thousand dollars more on alternate bids. The bids include three additional classrooms and a fitness room/wrestling room.

The school will be built near the intersection of 48th Street and Bluff Road. It will replace Fort Madison Middle School and Denmark Elementary School.

Marang says the district will soon begin discussions on what to do with FMMS. He says the property has been offered to the city of Fort Madison.

Marang says the school in Denmark will revert to the local education association.

A groundbreaking for the new 110,000 ft2 building will be scheduled once a construction contract is finalized.

He says the district hopes to open the school in two years.
