Food from Farmers, Not Factories

Macomb, IL – Planning is underway to begin a food co-op in Macomb. It could open as soon as this fall.

Gordon Rands, member of the co-op steering committee, thinks the co-op would complement what's offered at places such as the Farmer's Market and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms.

"A co-op that sources local produce, among other things, could actually be an additional outlet for local producers," said Rand.

The co-op could also offer bulk foods. In addition, there is talk of selling soup and sandwiches in order to attract more customers.

Clare Kernek, who is also on the steering committee, believes a food co-op centered around local foods can succeed.

"I know that there have been really successful co-ops in much smaller communities than Macomb," said Kernek. "So why not here?"

She said it might need to start small with a core group committed to the idea.

About two dozen people took part in a planning meeting on May 19. They broke into smaller task forces to discuss marketing, membership, and legal issues plus other topics.

A fact sheet available at the meeting defined a co-op as a business owned by the people who use it. It is 100% locally owned and controlled. People can become members by purchasing shares.

Organizers still need to decide on a name for the co-op. Once a name is chosen, the co-op can incorporate, which will allow it to start raising money.

Organizers also need to find a location for the store. It appears a site on the courthouse square is preferred.
