The fire department is looking into the cause of a fire at 58 S. Cherry St.  The department said it’s not yet known whether the building will be declared a total loss.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were called the scene shortly before 2:00 a.m. Friday.  They found heavy smoke coming from the second floor windows and the roof line.  The building’s tenants and those from an adjacent building were evacuated.

Fire Chief Tom Simkins said the building sustained smoke and water damage and its roof collapsed.

Cherry Street was closed Friday from Main Street to Simmons Street as the clean up and investigation continued.

The city said the building is currently owned by Keith Straitiff and operated as The Burg’s Bar and Grill.

Simkins said the fire is believed to have started in the kitchen area. He said it took around two hours to bring the fire under control.
