Fight Prompts SCC to Plan for Events

Southeastern Community College (SCC) will develop a plan for handling large events in response to a fight that followed a recent men’s basketball game.

Indian Hills Community College (Ottumwa, IA) traveled to West Burlington on February 16 and defeated S-C-C in double overtime.

A fight that broke out afterwards led to players from each team being suspended, with more penalties possible.

SCC President Michael Ash says he is disappointed the fight took away from a hard-fought game.

He says the college has always handled large events on an informal basis, without a written down plan with coordinated responsibilities.

Dr. Ash says workers just knew for what they were responsible.

He says the incident shows the need for SCC to develop an official event management plan that would cover security, parking, and even concession stands.

Dr. Ash says he will form a committee to develop the plan, including administrators and members of the athletic department.
