The Burlington Police Department announced Monday morning that human remains found at Lake West in June 2016 belong to a missing Burlington man.
Lt. Greg Allen said the portion of a human foot was sent to the FBI Crime Lab in Quantico, VA shortly after its discovery. But Lt. Allen said it was not until last week that the BPD learned the foot belonged to Steven Leasure.
Leasure’s family reported him missing in May 2015. His bicycle was found near Lake West shortly after he disappeared.
Local law enforcement spent several days searching the lake and the surrounding area following the discovery of the foot, but did not disclose if anything was found.
Lt. Allen said in a statement that the disappearance of Steve Leasure remains an ongoing criminal investigation.
