Expanding Macomb Rotaract & Helping People in an African Slum

www.kibera.org.uk

Two Macomb residents are apart of an international volunteer organization that helps people within their own community and around the globe.

Macomb Rotaract is affiliated with the international volunteer organization Rotary International.

Macomb's branch used to be identified as "WIU Rotaract" and only allowed student participation.

However, members Chris Busker and Mirissa Martin were looking for more community involvement so the organization now encourages all young adults from the area to participate, even if they're not WIU students.

"We realized we could be a better use to the community if we weren't only limited to WIU students," Busker said.

"Macomb Rotaract provides a place for people to get involved in their community, to find friends that want to better their community. We've been working on an international service project called Kick it for Kibera."

Kick it for Kibera is a human foosball tournament fundraiser. Mirissa Martin said 100% of their proceeds will go straight to Kibera, a slum in Africa.

"We wanted to do something fun, not just where we ask for people's money," Martin said.

Busker and Martin had email correspondence with a priest serving in Kibera. Busker discovered the problems in the slum are breathtaking in a bad way.

"There's a lot of things that we don't have to deal with in this country that they have to deal with. Witch doctors cut out childrens' organs, sewage flows on their doorstep, there are a lot of problems."

Busker said they were moved by the priest's presentation to Rotary and felt it was a project they could get behind.

"Even though it's halfway across the world, 100% of the money we raise in our community helps one of the most destitute communities in the world. That speaks volumes," said Busker.

Busker and Martin are both on Macomb Rotaract's executive board.

They say every donation counts and will benefit the cause for Kibera.
