Environmental Study Back On Track In Keokuk

Keokuk, IA – An environmental study on a site in Keokuk, with economic development potential, is back underway. The 2nd phase of a Brownfield study, to analyze and determine soil contamination, has been underway at the old Ferro-Sil property. Before the final results were compiled, large piles of dirt and rock were temporarily dumped on the property. Mayor Dave Gudgel says that delayed the findings. He says more tests are being conducted so the Iowa Department of Natural Resources can add the results to its final report. Gudgel says initial reports show the site will be able to be used for development in the future. He says private money is being used to conduct the additional tests. The original study was paid for with a grant obtained by the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission. Gudgel says there is significant interest, from investors, in the property, due in part, to the creation of the Southeast Iowa Regional & Economic Port Authority.
