Republicans took control of the US House, while Democrats narrowly held on to the US Senate. Some of the GOP winners have ties to the Tea Party movement. Their next challenge will be to prove they have the ability to govern, which can be more difficult than campaigning.
Some Democratic lawmakers who are women were ousted from Congress, but women's numbers won't drop much - if at all - because of the number of Republican women who won elections.
Democratic Illinois Governor Pat Quinn appears to have won his election against Republican Bill Brady, even though Quinn won just four of the state's 102 counties. His margin of victory in Cook County, which is easily the state's largest county, was enough to give him the edge.
