Election for Illinois Treasurer Finally Decided

Rich Egger

State Senator Mike Frerichs (D-Urbana) appears to have won the race to be Illinois’ next state treasurer.

If the current totals hold, this will go down in history as one of Illinois' narrowest general election victories.

According to the independent Illinois Election Data website, Frerichs won by fewer than 10,000 votes — a fraction of a percent of the 3.5 million votes cast.

No matter -- a win is a win -- and State Representative Tom Cross (R-Oswego) conceded the race.

In a statement he said, "Senator Frerichs has demonstrated time and time again his commitment to our state and that will serve all of us well.”

Cross gave up his seat in the Illinois House to seek the treasurer’s office.

Frerichs' victory will leave an open state Senate seat representing the communities of Champaign, Urbana and Danville.
